Air Barriers and Continuous Insulation Systems
Advanced presentation on moisture management, the mechanics of various air barrier systems, rainscreen systems, and continuous insulation systems. The speaker will also discuss moisture movement in typical exterior wall assemblies, the physical forces at play - water in all its forms, air movement through the building, forces related to building usage, issues with high humidity, condensation and ventilation.
Curtain wall assemblies are impacted by newer code standards which require more robust accommodation for wind and seismic activity, larger story drift, and potential for glass breakage. Learn how seismic drift requirements impact aesthetics and constructability. The seminar will also focus on design issues related to slab edge design, available glazing components, selection of glass, shading mechanisms, and review common glazing type and the manufacturing process.
Below-Grade Waterproofing Systems
A technical review concentrating on design, specifications and construction of below-grade waterproofing systems. The seminar will focus on design issues related to shoring systems, perched water tables, and bentonite systems. Review of case studies that illustrate failed systems, the causation and the remedial solutions. Receive instruction on essential below-grade design considerations and construction best practices protocols that are vital to create livable, waterproof and sustainable buildings.

Thorough consideration of proper selection of roofing systems, how geography affects different roof types, roofing energy requirements, common design mistakes and aesthetics versus durability. Examination of waterproofing for various roof types and evaluation of relative systems and components.
Thermoplastic Roofs - How are they Performing?
This session provides an engineering view of long term performance of existing thermoplastic roofs including Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Thermoplastic Poly Olefin (TPO). Discussion will include physical and chemical issues related to TPO and PVC, various additives that make up the system, and the impact of the additives on the performance of the system and the environment. Some of the findings include performance issues of roofs under high heat and solar reflection, creasing of sheets, splitting at seams and walk pads.
